My Inaugural Post

21 Jan

So, here it is: the first post to EC. Suddenly, I’m at a loss for what I’m supposed to say. That doesn’t bode well for this blog’s longevity, does it? Well, when I took journalism class in high school, I was told to always start with the five Ws.

Who

I’m a geek. Yeah, duh, I’m writing blog, so that’s pretty much a given. I’m a thirty-mumble year old software engineer. In that vague, stilted vernacular people like to use when describing their jobs, I write avionics software requirements for a large aerospace company. This is my forth job since college. I’ve worked on database intensive information systems, custom industrial robot controllers, business automation via intranet web tools, and a full service real estate website and work flow application. So, I’m a pretty well rounded software engineer. Outside of work, I’m a bit of an exercise freak; though, I have gone through a couple of extended periods where I slacked off. I’m also an information junkie. There’s a bookmark folder in by bookmarks tool bar on Firefox called daily reads. It contains Slashdot, Digg, Ars Technica, Planet Gnome, MacNN, Engadget, the AVS forum, and Fark. I told you I was a geek. I read a lot. In addition to the above, I still like the crisp pages of dead trees. In that space, I read mostly non-fiction, particularly history. Though, I still dabble in science fiction, as well. That’s about enough about me. I don’t want to risk boring you to death.

What

So, what will I be blogging about? Things which interest me, of course. I probably won’t blog about work much…that’s dangerous territory, but I still do quite a bit of experimenting with programming tools, web programming, and general geek toys a home. So, expect to see a lot about that. Also, don’t be surprised to see posts about exercise, books, music, movies, photography, and home improvement, as those are my interests (except for that last one…I’m forced to do it, so you’re likely to here about it :) )

What are you not likely to see here? Politics for one. I just doesn’t interest me all that much. Besides, despite all the hoopla, about new media and the like, politics on the net has proven to be just as much of a load in insular group think as politics in meat space. The other guys are evil, if only we, the secret, selfless minority, were in charge, all would be blissful. Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Maybe someday you’ll have to govern, and then I suspect you’ll turn out much like all the rest. The sad thing is that all of the “sides” in these endless debates can’t see how alike they are.

When

Whenever the muse strikes.

Why

I spend a great deal of my day reading and writing software requirements specifications. These are very structured, jargon filled documents that are pretty much the antithesis of creative writing. In truth, I really haven’t done any non-technical writing since college. Like any muscle, writing prose needs to be exercised or it will atrophy. Let’s hope that atrophy isn’t too evident.

Where

Here, where else?

How

Okay, that one is just silly in this context.
